Time and again users synchronize their laptop with the mail server via a normal dial-in connection from (say), their hotel room, whilst the PDA sits nearby hankering after the data streaming from the infrared port. As it is not always easy to demonstrate the added value of using a PDA, namely more efficient and objective working, companies have had little inclination to invest in this type of device. But in reality, with the arrival of wireless networks and the continual developments in the field of handheld’s, this is the dawn of a new era in the use of these devices. New PDA’s do not need to be synchronized through a PC or laptop, but exchange data directly with the company network via an in-built modem.
